change to top post battery
#1
I hate side post batteries.
I am thinking of changing to a top post battery in my 1996 Blazer.
Does anybody know if there is enough hood clearance to change over?

I don't have any useful information, but I'm interested in changing to a top post, as well. I hate the side post batteries our trucks have with a passion!
Maybe get a piece of wood the same thickness as what a top post would add, lay on top of the battery, and see if the hood closes?
I think it would be quite a light show to close the hood and connect with both + and - posts!

I can't say for sure on a sec gen but my 1984 first gen had a multi post battery in it when I bought it - I don't mind the side post myself but the extra top posts on it made it a piece of cake to jump somebody

You should have plenty of space! I have a Optima with top and side posts and have terminals on the top posts that are made with a stud and wing nut to attach aux wires to and even with my "big 3" wires attached I don't have any issue at all.

even if there is contact , it squeezes out of the way
I think there is enough room
Usually Dual post batteries fit in GMs without issue

My 2 cents. I despise the side post batteries, I use dual posts ONLY!! I need the side posts for stock connections, but the top posts are invaluable for accessories and jumping off others/myself when necessary. I recently added a second battery to mine, used the top post of the main to connect to the second, as well as my amps. In my humble opinion, dual posts are worth the extra $, hands down.

I agree with the 'dual posts' battery. The extra posts are convenient for hooking up aux power directly to the battery as they should be. What hasn't been addressed is the battery cables. Don't just lop the old side term. conn. off the old GM cables and use some universal auto parts store batt. connectors added to the ends of the GM cables. Yes, they will fit and yes, they may work for a while. But you need new cables with the correct top connectors soldered in. The old cables are part of the problem. The old ones are 10 plus years old and are too small in gauge.
