Default Chezy Blazer - Service assistance - How much?!!

Hey All,

I purchased a Chevy Blazer and have taken the car into a local garage for a service and inspection. (I am currently based in Kazakhstan)

Please note, the guy only checked the engine bay and lifted the car (on a ramp) and checked underneath.. the whole procedure took about 15mins.

The car is a 2000 Chevy Blazer LS model. It has 45,000 miles on the clock and has mainly been used around town.

I received the following list of things to do:

1) Transmission belt
2) Transmission belt’s rolling elements
3) Gasoline pump + filter
4) Plugs
5) Engine oil + filter
6) Automatic transmission oil + filter
7) Layer pad of engine’s under pan
8) Engine’s filler block
9) Two filler blocks of front axle
10) Wheel hub’s collar front left
11) Steering Y-piece
12) Floating lever Y-piece
13) Upper ball joint
14) Lower ball joint
15) Rear outward collar
16) Replacement of front and rear shock absorbers
17) Replacement of front and rear breaking pads
18) Oil changing in reducing unit
19) Antifreeze changing and HPS’s (hydraulic power steering) liquid
20) A/C filling up
21) Geometry

The local driver quoted $2000 for the above, but it is a rough estimate.

This has been translated from Russian, so there may be a slight mix up with words, but I am hoping someone on here can assist.

My concern, is over here, they know I am working for the British Embassy, so I have Diplomatic number plates, therefore most garages will just add money on because they know I can't speak the language, and will not question what parts I need or not.

I do have some previous history of what was done on the car - see below:

Blazer 12/3/2010 D001199 43000 Air filter
Blazer 12/3/2010 D001199 43000 Engine oil
Blazer 12/3/2010 D001199 43000 Oil filter
Blazer 18/8/2010 D001199 43000 Coolant fluid
Blazer 18/8/2010 D001199 43000 Thermostat
Blazer 27/1/2011 D001199 43500 Tire
Blazer 28/2/2011 D001199 43700 Fuel filter
Blazer 28/2/2011 D001199 43700 Fuel pump
Blazer 12/8/2011 D001199 44000 Oil filter

What do you think about the list above in relation to what the garage has just quoted me?

I do not have any knowledge on trucks or 4x4 cars in general, so any help with the above would be great

Any help would be great

Heh... looks like the guy at the garage knows his Blazers.
You didnt mention what YOUR complaints are...
needing new fuel pump is interesting. If he heard it acting up, wouldnt be surprising.
And 2000 to replace all that is a pretty good deal. But, they'll get their cheap knockoffs from the same mfg source ours do. Which means they dont last long.

Fuel filter every year not a bad idea, considering local conditions.

What you need is a local car guy to advise you.

Just a thought but it might be a good idea to find out if there's anyone at the US embassy who'd like a sixpack of beer for checking it out. I'm betting someone in the Marine detachment knows something about them.

First rule of brands for the car: NO BOSCH, plugs only NGK or AC DElco, wires distributor cap/rotor AC Delco. Accessory belt may need replacing, Idler/Tensioner pulleys, probably not. Not Dayco brand for the belt, has noise problems.

I'm assuming by transmission belt you mean the serpentine belt on the front of the motor correct? And I agree with newguy if it ain't broke don't fix it. Allot of these are things that you can replace with simple hand tools. There is a ton of info on here. I would start there and save yourself a ton of money by doing things yourself. Most of us are glad to help in any way we can just ask. Good luck and happy blazering!

just to let you know the weaknesses of these vehicles :

fuel pumps
spider injection

everything else is just a random maintenance issue.

If it runs and drives fine, just do a oil change, brakes, and a decent tune up and drive it.
