I have a 96 S 10 that i want to swap a fresh stock motor to is there any reason to stay year specific with the long block. Also i know that a G M remain. is probably best ,but what could be the biggest difference in using a long block from say, auto zone, checker, pep boys, auto parts stores.could use some help with the decision

What is prompting this decision? You could have your engine rebuilt for less than a long block. How is your compression and leak down?
