Default Clicking when driving.

OK, so when I am driving I hear a slight clicking when I am driving. It is faint enough that when I have the windows up I don't hear it. When I put my blazer in 4x4 it goes away, but as soon as I put it back in two wheel drive it comes back. This leads me to believe that it isn't completely coming out of 4x4. The 4x4 does disengage, but it is clicking. Any suggestions asto what I can do to fix this????

It is possible that the front axle engagement mechanism is not disengaging properly. This can happen if the spring at the actuator and/or in the axle has broken, or if the actuator cable has started to freeze up.

Another possibility is that the u-joint/cv-joint in the front driveshaft have gone bad. Same could be true for one of the half shafts.

Does it seem to do it more when you turn left or right?

No, it dosen't change when I turn left or right. Where can I find said spring at the actuator or the axle. That is what I am assuming it is.

There are a few different springs. Two are in the axle behind the cable mounting plate and one is at the actuator. Maybe the first thing would be to make sure that the cable is not frozen up...

OK, I need you to "mickey mouse" this for me what would you do step by step to try to solve this problem. Please put it in simple easy to read steps so that I am not too confused on this. Next weekend I am doing a radiator/heater core flush (my dash is starting to sound like the niagra falls and my coolant isn't the cleanest looking) I figure I am going to just spend all day on my ride fixing things here and there. I am getting deployed to Iraq soon and I don't want to leave it with any problems for the wife. Her DD is a '07 Grand Caravan, but she will be driving it every now and then, because I don't want it to sitt for 12-13 months. If you could let me know how I can go about trouble shooting this I would greatly appreciate it.

You need to verify that is where the noise is coming from first... I realize that you have a sense of urgency with this, but it takes quite a bit of time to gather the information you are looking for and in my current schedule, I really need to know that it is going to be beneficial to justify going through the motions.

Sorry I posted in the wrong area. Didn't even relize that I did that. Yeah, I am driving a 1998 4WD LT 4 door. It sounds to me that the sound is coming from the front axle just to the driver's side of the center. I will try to make better note of where it is coming from and I will let you know if I can get it narrowed down to a smaller area for you.
