Default clunking noise during hard acceleration...

I have been noticing when I do a hard acceleration I here a clunking noise like metal is hitting metal. A friend of mine said that the U-joints may be going out. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

There's been quite a bit of discussion of clunking and popping noises in the last few weeks. Seems to happen under quite a variety of conditions and there are lots of possible causes and solutions. Some of us still haven't figured ours out, even after multiple trips to the mechanics, but if you haven't read those posts yet or done a search, you might get some ideas. Good luck.

A hard acceleration could cause my clunk, as it sometimes happens with sudden speed-ups or slow-downs. But I've had the u-joints and entire suspension checked and nothing was found to be wrong. My clunk is not very loud and only happens sporadically, so I've kind of given up worrying about it, but I'd sure like to know what it is.

I forgot to mention that some of those posts about clunking and popping were under Suspension, and some were under General Tech, so look both places, and there may even have been some in the New Member section.

might want to check the torque converter bolts...yeah, I know it sounds really stupid, but it happened to a friend of mine. The T.C. bolts had backed out, and no one, not even the dealership could figure it out. On a whim, I pulled the inspection cover and threw a wrench on the bolts, only to find they were loose. It might be worth a try, and its only four bolts that hold on the cover.
