Default Common Cat Rattle made worse?

Hey everyone!

After searching around for a bit I have noticed the cat rattle I am experiencing is quite common. Unfortunately this lulled me into complacency... I ignored it and went down the road! Now it isnt rattling anymore and I am getting major power loss when I put my foot into it.

Obviously I am replacing the cat, but is there any chance it plugged my muffler? I am getting a CA certified cat, which is crazy expensive, so I would rather not have to replace the whole dang system. Although... it would be a good excuse to sneak in a cat back system and not have to get it approved with the wife...

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The entire exhaust systems on these units can be replaced in your driveway/garage provided you have a torch. Even at retail, the entire system should not cost more than about $350,but be sure to obtain ALL new hardware and gaskets! Use stainless steel bolts for longevity. Took me about 3 hours at my company shop. If you elect to have a shop do the converter, they may tell you the muffler is toast;and it may or may not be-dependant upon mileage/environment,but a clogged converter will not ruin a muffler. BUT,if it was my Blazer and I planned on keeping it:I'd replace the whole system especially if the unit has more than 125K or so-this is a cheap peace of mind! Good luck!

I appreciate the response! It is coming up on 190k, so I am sure it has seen its wear... I dont have a torch and I am in an apartment that lacks adequate workspace, so that may be an issue. I will see what is out there though.

If you heard rattling, the catalyst has broken loose from the shell. If the catalyst breaks apart, pieces can and do work their way into the muffler and restrict flow. After the converter is removed, you can look into the outlet and see if it has pieces missing. You can also look into the muffler inlet and check that also. If you don't have a torch, a sawsall works well too, easy system to replace. Don't toss the old converter, scrap yards pay decent money for them
