Default Rattle, rattle, rattle!

The following issue takes place in a 1989 Chevy S-10 Blazer. 4.0 engine, 4 x 4, automatic...
"Rattle, Rattle, Rattle..."
It sounds like a chunk of license plate in a slow blender.
Like a piece of metal is bouncing around, against something that spins.
It doesn't seem to be IN the engine, and it's certainly NOT in the valve train, or anywhere up top.
Crawling under and listening leads me to either inside the bell housing or maybe in the back of the engine.
The sound is on the loud side, and comes and goes.
It rattles in park, neutral and IN gear. Any gear.
ENGINE SPEED CHANGES NOTHING!
Rev it UP, and it rattles.
Let it idle, and it still rattles. AT THE SAME SPEED.
It's been to FIVE different mechanics, and still no answer.
The best plan so far is to "drive it till something falls out or off", THEN we'll know what it was!

Has anyone else experienced anything like this in their ride?

ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated!
