compare Vortec 4.3's--all same after '96?
Hello--
I want to buy a new Blazer/Jimmy/Bravada. I'd like to get a similar engine to what we already have, since we know it so well after 268K miles. I currently have a 95 Blazer with the 4.3L Vortec L35. I know the next year they switched to sequential fuel injection, and that apparently was a GOOD thing. I'm wondering what other significant changes were made over the next few years, and what years and/or engine mods to avoid, if there were any. Besides the hp, what differences are there between the vin W and vin Z from 96-99?
I'd actually like to get something newer than a 99--what's the latest year this engine can be found in? I don't really want to move up the the TrailBlazer, since I prefer the smaller S-10 body style. Is there something else I should consider? Thanks for any advice!

In mid '02, the 4.3L Vortec had an updated MFI fuel injection spider as well as a revised EGR system. This is probably the pinacle of 4.3L development on the same basic long block (heads to oil pan). You can tell this engine from the previous SCFI engine by the absense of the EGR valve on the front of the intake between the A/C compressor and the alternator. I think your choices will be limited to Blazer's for the '02+ stuff...
As far as the GMT360 platform vehicles go ('02+ Trailblazer, Envoy, Bravada, & Rainier), they are a very good improvement over the S-series platform. My Rainier isn't any longer than my Bravada was and is just a bit wider. Overall, the ride quality and driveability in my Rainier better than my old Bravada. That and the interior layout is vastly improved!

I drove an 04 trailblazer with 6 people in it towing about 1.5 times its rated limit half way across the country, and it didnt have any issues. Granted with that much weight the I6 had to be floored to do 25 up any sort of incline, but it would run at its redline for 20 miles without complaint. But i love my blazer too.
