It rained & got cool enough to turn heater on the heater this morning. Got a slight smell of coolant & windows fogged up. after driving around I didn't see any coolant leaks around the motor or on the ground. If it is a heater core, anything I should know about testing or screwed & having replacing it? Thanks in advance to who reply.

 

Sounds like heater core to me... When mine started leaking I got a strong antifreeze smell in the cab with anything blowing out of the vents. It's not a super hard project to undertake, but it takes the better part of half a day to get done correctly and not break or misplace anything.








I went as far as completely opening up the the EVAP housing and wiping it down with thinner on a rag to get rid of any antifreeze residue

 

Classic description of a heater core leak. I speak from experience. Sure wasn't as easy to replace as the one in my '77 Chevy C10.

 

Considering what a pain it was to replace the blend-door actuator, what are people's thoughts about also replacing it while the dash is off?

 

1. How much is the part?
2. How difficult is it to replace (while everything is apart)?
3. How prone is it to failure?
I owned several S series since the 90s abd I've never had an issue with that particular part.

 

It is not very expensive but it is a bear to get out through the glove compartment opening. It is prone enough to failure to have several Youtube videos posted online on it.

 

Just make sure that the replacement is not of inferior quality compared to the functioning oem part.
