Default coolant system problems!

my coolant resovior is full of coolant but my radiator keeps getting empty. i refill my radiator atleast once a week with about a gallon of antifreeze, and when it gets low my temp gauge goes all the way up and i get a "check gages" warning light on my dash. idk why the coolant from the resovior tank doesnt empty and fill the rad. could something be clogs. any input would help alot thanks

If you have no external leaks, check your oil level. You very well might have a leaking intake manifold gasket.

Any type of leak in the cooling system can cause this. If the system isnt air tight, a vacuum doesnt form when the engine cools. The vacuum is what pulls coolant in the radiator when its low. But yes, FIND THE LEAK! if its going into the crankcase thats bad.

Well, it's definitely going somewhere. Either outside or inside the motor.

I would start out by checking the hoses to make sure they aren't cracked or leaking anywhere.

Is your over flow tank over filled , like the radiator cap is just letting it go by , also is your floor board wet , could be a heater core . I'm just throwing out places where you wouldnt really notice the leak . Or fill the radiator and let it run in your drive way till it warms up to operating temp then get a real good flash light and check everything out water pump , hoses , and under the vehicle . Good luck

One possibility is a leaking head gasket. Combustion gasses leak into the coolant passage displacing the water. The coolant resevoir would then over flow onto the ground but the radiator would show low when the cap was removed.

Get the loan a tool pressure tester at Autozone, pressurize and look for leaks it's the best way to know where the leak is
