Default Crankshaft position sensor, or something else?

Hey guys,

I had a quick question for you all. I have my 2004 Blazer 4.3L X code V6...I have been chasing issues with this thing for months. One of the biggest problems is the performance issues and the fact that the truck intermittently has lack of power.

The other day, I went to "passing gear" or WOT and noticed that at 3000 RPM or so, my needle bounced up and down between 3000 and 5000 RPM freely before settling back to normal. I parked at the store I was going to and drove home.....replicated the issue and this time it threw a code that turned out to be P0335....crankshaft position sensor.

Drove to work and parked for the night. When I got out this AM, I noticed the CEL was off. Drove the truck on the highway and replicated the issue again 2 more times, but this time no CEL???

Any thoughts on if this is infact the sensor or something else? ALso, I have been noticing that the truck had a funny bouncy type idle and on the start it blows white smoke that smells kind of rich. Additionally, when you giv eit gas it sounds like the engine is really working and you can really hear the valves/lifters ticking away. misfire somewhere?

Needs some help please.

thanks!!

P0335 means the PCM detected a problem with a crankshaft position sensor circuit, not necessarily the sensor, could just be a poor connection. If the crankshaft position sensor is moved, removed, replaced or disturbed in any way, the crankshaft position sensor relearn must be performed.

Default But could it be anything more?

I am going to have a friend that is a teacher at the auto vocational school do the sensor anyway and have the wires and everything looked at. My concern was that the transmission was not having issue. Especially since I just had it rebuilt. I was able to replicate the issue a few more times, but no check engine light came on. Could the symptoms I mentioned earlier be caused by this?

BTW, the school has the snap on computer to be able to due the relearn with no issue.

Sounds like a plan, keep us posted on the outcome.

Similar to a computer: If you supply it with bad information, you'll get bad information out of it. If the engine doesn't supply smooth power to the transmission, the transmission can not supply smooth power to the differential. While driving, it could easily be perceived as a transmission problem. There have been a lot of transmissions overhauled needlessly due to a misdiagnosed engine problem
