Default Cruise control on an '03 Chev Blzr w/4WD stopped working

Driving on a rainy day, the cruise quit working and I was wondering what I should check to trouble shoot. I understand it could be a fuse, vacuum hose, and the mech. cables look good. What else should I check out ? No work done to the engine lately. I did replace the rear brakes and that required a brake bleeding 3X. TIAFYHelp, Jim in SC

I recall the 'multifunction switch' also known as the 'turn signal switch' may also be a factor. May be the brake switch on the pedal could also be an issue ??

See Attachments. Start with Diagnostic Starting Point. Use a scanner that will read ALL the codes including U codes like Car Diagnostic Pro.

Les,Myer, thanks for the thorough list of diagnostic steps to check. I have only the inexpensive code reader not a high level scanner. But I see some of these require only a test lamp and a volt ohm meter to do the diagnostic tests! I have those..... I will go through them as soon as I get my brakes in shape. I can drive without a cruise control, but not without brakes. Thanks a lot for this info, Jim

I took a few moments to look at the 'No Cruise' problem on my 2003 and think I have found the problem. There are two cables attached to the black cruise box. One goes back to the accel. pedal and the other one goes to the cruise system. This later one was not attached to the cruise box !?!? There's your problem, right there -----Eric O from SMA would say.
The cable end has a small plastic attachment and it had come off the post on the cruise box. I slipped it on and the cruise then worked on a test run. But It eventually popped off again. It looks like there is a steel 'Cee' clip missing that locks the round cable end securely to the attachment point. I would imagine it is a smaller version of the 'C' clip like the one that holds the door handle on to the gear mechanism.or the window handle on a manual window. I don't have any of those 'C' clips handy, so I found a plastic 'J' clip in the parking lot and it slipped on and held long enough to get me home with the cruise working. What are the odds of that happening ? The patron saint of mechanics must have been along with me on that ride.
When I go to AAP, AZ, O'Reilly's, or NAPA,,,,what do I ask for ? The high school clerk behind the counter wants a part name if not a part number. Thanks for your help with this problem, Jim in SC

I am doing what all expedient mechanics who live in rural areas do-----Improvise a solutuion. I will take a very small cable tie and use it as a clamp to secure the cable **** into the small plastic 'barrel' to effect a steel clip. Problem solved while I watch the Australian Formula 1 race on ESPN.

I decided to use a neon color tie so the next mechanic will be able to see my shade tree fix and not pull it off and break something. Use the thinnest cable tie you can find. You are looking for 1/8 inch or less to fit in the slot on the plastic barrel. I took it for a test drive --during a Red Flag stop in the F1 race--- and it works well. Life is good.

BRAVO!!
Thank you jimspahr for that! As soon as you described the plastic clip I knew that was what happened to me. Was cruising along at 75 and BAMM no more cruise. My "trusty" mechanic lost that c-clip during recent engine repair. Fixed for now with a wire tie.
