Does the trip odo restart when the battery dies?

I set a trip odo and went like 40-60 miles and then the battery died and I had driven another amount, but filled up with the trip odo saying 18.2 miles and I put about 9 gallons in, just a little over....

I don't think I got 2mpg, because I filled up before driving to school, and drove around Peoria all week, getting my glass replaced... etc...
