Default Engine is LOUD on startup

In the mornings for the first two blocks my 4.3 sounds like a jet engine, then it settles down. I don't think it's the transmission because it's loud when I rev it in neutral too. Ideas?

Do you think it could be the cooling fan? Mine roars pretty loud on startup for a minute or so, then quiets down.

There is definitely a turbine quality to the sound. Is it the fan belt fixin to unravel?

The fan should "roar" on a cold start up, until the fluid in the clutch warms up. If you increase engine rpm to around 2500, the fluid will warm up and the fan should quiet down. It should remain quiet unless the engine begins to overheat, then it should roar again in an attempt to cool the engine.

No, the belt doesn't unravel, per se, it breaks when it fails. It almost always picks the most inopportune time to do it, as well. What I did when I got the Bravada was got a brand new belt and put on, and kept the old one in the cargo area. If and when the new belt decides to break, I've already got another one I can use until I get to an AutoZone.

But yes, the sound is normal on a cold start.

Thx for the explanation. Okay, that is one worry out of the way. This is a really good board, I've gotten some really good stuff from you guys.
Only a few more to go...

Just like the propane tank on my gas grill. What's with that anyway, always right while I'm cooking? Can't catch a break sometimes.
