Default Engine Replace time.../ ?? Parts

So my engine took a dump, ..not clear what exact cause is yet till shop looks at it or when it’s pulled. Mine already needed oil pan and valve cover gaskets quoted at 1000.00 bucks + now whatever blew.

So I found a lower mileage donor complete engine from a blazer that was hit on side for 600.00 bucks and 30.000 less miles than mine.

So to the point – I wanted to freshen up the donor engine while it’s outside the blazer and be a lot cheaper labor wise. I am trying to avoid the timing cover if in good shape due to issues I have read about concerning the Crank Position Sensor.

Below is what I have bought so far – Any other suggestions or thoughts.?

Crankshaft Rear Main Seal - Enginetech SK5007
Engine Gasket Set - Victor Reinz 953491VR
Oil Pump - SEALED POWER 22443469
Oil Pump Intermediate Shaft - SEALED POWER 2246146E
Oil Pump Screen - SEALED POWER 22415050
Oil Cooler Gasket - FEL-PRO ES70016
Serpentine Belt - DAYCO 5060950
Thermostat - STANT 45119
Water Pump - ACDelco 252-711 Professional
Distributor Cap - ACDELCO D328A
Distributor Rotor - ACDELCO D465
Ignition Coil - DELPHI CE20003
Spark Plugs - NGK 7164 Iridium IX
Spark plug wire set - SMP OE Plus Direct Fit; Premium 7 mm

Engine Gasket Set Victor Reinz 953491VR
Crankshaft Rear Main Seal

Oil Cooler Gasket
Serpentine Belt
Thermostat
Distributor Cap
Distributor Rotor
Ignition Coil
Spark Plugs
Spark plug wire set
Water Pump
Nix the Victor Reinz gaskets and go with the Felpro Sets. Much better LIM gaskets. Don't get a high pressure or high volume oil pump or you will be wearing out your distributor gear prematurely. You should check the distributor gear for abnormal wear. You may want to leave the rear main seal alone unless you have the installation tool and some skills. Personally, I would install timing chain and gears with updated tensioner, but don't forget that you will also need a new plastic timing cover to get things sealed up (they are not reuseable). Finally, remember that you will need to do a crank sensor relearn when switching engines or even disturbing the crank sensor at all or you will have a SES light on with false misfire codes. You will not be able to avoid the need for a crank sensor relearn in any case when switching engines. AC/Delco ignition parts are best for these Blazers and worth the few extra $$$. Good luck!

What year engine are you going to use, and what year is your Blazer? There are differences to consider.

I agree with Les on this. Use the Fel-Pro gaskets for sure. Since you have a 99 You can use engines from between 1996 and 2001 (I am pretty sure).

I already have the Gasket set, it does have the premium Intake manifold gaskets, and not enough time to change out.

I updated orig post above including brand/part #

I have a mechanic doing the work and am having him look at everything.

I think the cutoff would be sometime during 2001. Depends on if the block has gone to the 2-wire knock sensor or not. My 2001 has the two wire so mine would be too late to go in a 1999 without knock sensor mods.

1996 - 2000 are definitely bolt-ins. Earlier engines do not have roller rockers, so the heads are different - but both have roller lifters. However the original 1999 intake will bolt on any of these. Exhaust manifolds might be different as far as the A.I.R system. I would use the original manifolds for both intake and exhaust. Then everything is sure to be as expected by the PCM. I would not attempt to remove the tube from the drivers side exhaust manifold - just take it loose at the intake and move it out of your way.

I looked up a photo of the gasket kit. It looked like the intake gaskets were metal but hard to tell. If they are, you are PROBABLY okay. I too would have (and have twice so far ) used the felpro set.

I have the engine it's a 1999 Vin W... same as mine.....
This is what scares me about knock sensors and crank position sensors or any other sensors....Lol....all this new stuff....I guess I will never get out of the 70's technology.
If I could I would dump a 350 pre computer in it...Lol

Then you have exactly what you need!! Just make sure the mechanic does a crank sensor relearn or your misfire detection will be screwed up and the SES light will certainly be on. Best wishes! Let us know how engine turns out!

Does he realize the joy he is in for? Is this a pro shop or someone private?
