Well, VR claims to have used better material/construction to fix the issues so I thought I would post the link that describes both the VR and the Felpro gaskets. I still vote for the Felpro's but at least VR is acknowledging the problem and doing something different. Plus the article underlined the need for proper torque and sequence, as well as clean bolts and bolt hole threads. I ran a tap through my intake bolt holes and wire brushed the bolt threads. Plus the blind holes on the ends were full of compressed junk that needed to be dug out! Since the OP already bought his gaskets I thought being informed was the best route and he could make his own decision.

Does he realize the joy he is in for? Is this a pro shop or someone private?
Someone private, a new referral from the owner of a salvage yard I have done business with for 28 yrs. First time needing a engine installed here in Vegas, but the owner said he is very good, and does all their business.

Question - Not knowing this guys setup till this weekend, should I have to take to another place, what would this relearn cost on average ?

I do them for myself, but have heard of the $50-$100 range. Only takes a few minutes but you have to pay for the equipment. Dealer is a certainty as are big pro shops. Make sure no codes other than misfire and that it runs good before you take it in for crank sensor relearn. Otherwise may have to be fixed before the relearn can be done.

It would be a common thing needing done when switching engines. So maybe he has what he needs.

OOOPS - I almost forgot. If bearings went out in previous engine, the radiator should be replaced and remote oil filter adapter/oil cooler lines should be thoroughly flushed to ensure all particles are out of the remote oil cooler system. This is something you have to do in order to get warranty on a rebuilt engine and is applicable to 4WD Blazers. Don't want to run junk from the old engine through the new engine.

I am thinking based on lifter noise prior to, it will turn out to be a push rod and or rocker arm based on what I am hearing....also may be a bad exhaust gasket and or head gasket based on 2'nd sound at worst, I don't think it was anything below heads.

And definitely already told him to flush everything, heater core, radiator, and replacement engine.

I met the mechanic in person today,
The day after I talked to him 3 weeks ago 2 days before he left on 3 week vacation his shop burned to the ground with 8 customers vehicles inside, he had a body shop and repair shop together, he was showing me pictures, sad....

He is using 2 friends shops for now, but he does have all needed tools and scanners, he said he just bought a new scanner that cost 8,000 bucks yesterday.

Edited>
Just thought about this....I am glad I had to wait to send my blazer
due to not having parts yet, he wanted me to bring it over that day to
get it done before he left on vacation 3 days later......
....My Blazer would have burned with the other cars....**** I am glad
I told him to go ahead on vacation I wanted to take some time to look
into parts . >

So shipping Blazer to shop Monday Morning....fingers crossed
the blazer will be back on the road Wednesday or Thursday.

Also I found this below article
trying to learn about this relearn stuff:
