Hi-

I just got done replacing my two front wheel bearings on my 98 4door 4wd. The left side came off real easy, the right side however was a Bear! Had to rent a gear puller to finally get it to break free. Anyway, I had rented an electric impact wrench to break the hub nuts free, and used the wrench to put them back on. I took it for a short ride. When I got home I put my hand on both front wheels and they were hot to the touch. I then looked up the torque specs, broke the hub nuts free with the electric impact, and re-torqued them with my "new" torque wrench to 103 ft lbs as per Swartlkk's post.

Took the car for a little bit longer ride, made sure the brakes worked (that was the original problem) The ABS sensors were going nuts on the original bearings. Everything works great!

I'm still getting excessive heat though after re-tightening the hub nuts. Any ideas? I don't think my front wheels should be hot to the touch after a 10 mile trip in town.

 

I dont know if its normal or if i have the same problem as you... But I have steel wheels and they get HOT as HECK pretty quickly!

 

this sounds like you have a brake caliper hanging. my 96 gmc 4x4 is doing the same thing.

 

Jack it up and rotate the wheels to see if the calipers not releasing.
