Default Foot on gas to stay running

I have a 2001 4D 4WD Blazer. Just recently I had an issue where I couldn’t get it in park. It would go through all the gears but not into park. I’m guessing the shift cable needs replaced. I had to disconnect the battery because I’m unable to turn the key the whole way back. The battery has been disconnected for about 24 hours and now when I try to start it, it won’t stay running unless I give it gas. As soon as I let off the gas it stalls.

I read that on some vehicles when you disconnect the battery for an extended period of time that it can reset some of the computer sensor settings causing it to have issues as I was describing. Could this be the case? Thanks!

Ok, for whatever reason today I thought I'd try again. I hooked the battery up and started it up in neutral but would only stay running if I gave it gas. I shut it off and just thought I'd try to get it in park again and it went right in. A little sloppy but it went in. Then it ran fine. it didn't stall out at all. Took it for a short drive and back in my driveway. Any ideas what would cause it? I really can't drive it unless I figure out what's going on.

Does anyone know how my blazer not going into park and not idling correctly would be related? I'm at a loss. The garage said that unless it has the problem they can't troubleshoot. Which I understand but when it happens I can't drive it. lol I don't want to drive it at all right now because I'm afraid it will let me sit. Please help!!!!

For the idle problem. I would check the Idle Air Control Valve and see if it needs replacing.

I found this one on Amazon.

If your transmission is not going into park. Check the transmission shift cable. It is adjustable. It is on the drive side of the transmission.

As to the two of the problems being related I have no clue.

I agree with your statement and if they were not happening at the same time that's exactly what I would try replacing but it seems like the problem is related. It only has the idling problem when it won't go into park.

The PCM adjusts the amount of air entering the engine at idle with the IAC motor on the throttle body. An engine with some miles on it may not idle properly with the factory default settings, so the PCM has to relearn what IAC opening keeps it running when you disconnect the battery and kill the adaptives in it's memory. It just may be a coincidence that the PCM relearned the right setting when you got the trans in park. You don't know if the two issues are related unless the same behavior repeats itself.

Thanks for the info. I did read that before and even asked a buddy who's a mechanic if that might be my issue. He said he never heard of that happening before. Hope that is the case. I'm replacing the IAC and the shifting cable this week so I hope it does the job. Thanks for your input.
