Yup, something is screwy with the clutch mechanism. The axle tube has to come off to get at it. Which means the half shaft has to come off first.

Looking ahead, what will I find after removing the axle tube? Will I be able to access all of the parts in there which might need replacement or should I be prepared to open up the differential? I don't know that I'll tackle this job any time between now and November because I don't expect adverse driving conditions between now and then but I'd like to plan ahead as much as possible. I keep an eye on Craigslist for any parts I may need in the future.

Another question: Is the front axle the same from the first-gens to the second-gens? I've got a wrecked '94 Jimmy that has a perfect front axle. Assuming the front differential has the same gears, can I just swap that axle in place of the one in the '98?

Good question, I think the clutch mechanism is the same, but you might want to check with a boneyard to see if the entire differential will fit though.

If it's just a matter of measuring to make sure I can measure the axle on my '94. I've already pulled the engine and sold it so I can easily go measure the axle. Depending on what I find when I pull the axle tube on the '98 I may decide to try the swap from the '94. My nephew is spending most of the summer with me and he wants to work on cars. As long as I've got an eager helper I might as well tackle the job.
