Default Fuel Pump?

I have a 2001 Blazer LT 4x4. I have had difficulty starting it. It will turn and sometimes start quickly(although low idle) and othe times it will not start for 5-10 minutes. When I do get it started, it will run OK until I accelerate. (backfire or slow acceleration) Mechanic says 905 dollars for fuel pump. He says it needs 58 pressure and am getting 40-50. Shoud I do it or could it be something stupid? Thanks

Fuel filter first.... That's $10 and 10 minutes of time to change.

(Edited: Hey - Wow - It let me reply!! there must be a glitch in the forum if it's working!)

If you do need to replace the fuel pump, install a OE /AC-Delco pump. You'll save yourself more aggravation and money in the long run as I've recently found out when Ihad toreplace my 1st less expensive (Carter) fuel pump after only 1500 miles. ( see my post 7/21/08 ) Good Luck. Skoot61

Test it yourself with a pressure gauge. Replacing the pump yourself isnt that bad but if you cant this is what I would do. First take the cover off over your back gas tank and take a RUBBER mallet and give the center of your tank a few good knocks. If your truck starts up alot easier this is a good indication of it being your pump. If it is your pump see if you can buy the pump yourself and give it to your mechanic and let him install it. DO NOT get a master or airtex pump they are litterally garbage! I got a top of the line Bocsh which was $430 but has an lifetime warranty. You can get also get an AC delco which is going to be the stock but should work pretty good. So say you drop 400 on the pump a good mechanic could do that job in 1-2 hours @ $60 an hour your looking at a $520 total. If you find out it is not only your pump then your going to be looking at possible MAF sensor, fuel pressure regulator, spider, ect... problems. Good luck

why not check the connections on the fuel pump, I had that problem with mine. To do it though, you have to lower your fuel tank and reach up over it and disconnect and reconnect I think three connectors that plug directly into the fuel pump. Might have corrosion on them... But before you do that it will not hurt to somehow move it into a garage or something similar that is a quiet place and when you turn your ignition switch to ON listen to the pump it should make a fairly loud buzzing sound which means it is getting power and is most likely working properly.
