Try giving the bottom of the tank a smack with a rubber mallet. I could never hear the fuel pump with the doors closed in my old Bravada, but I could hear it with the door open, so yes, you should hear it. Most have noisy pumps which you can hear with the doors closed.

If smacking the bottom of the tank works, you better try to get as much of that fuel pumped out as you can before you drop the tank and replace the pump (providing that the fuse and wiring check out).

ORIGINAL: TAZ454

Just had fuel pump replaced .

Cost me $587.00 OEM parts and labor on my 98 S10, but Its better than the first estimate I got from a shop that wanted to charge me $588 just for the pump plus $275 labor a total of $863.

Just had this done-pump died miles away from home 2 weeks ago. AAA had it towed to the nearest shop. Got the truck back 3 days later from the shop that towed it and guess what-$861 parts and labor which did not include towing (included on my insurance), OEM pump, filter, and new wiring harness. That was a kick in the you know what right before Christmas. Two hour ride from home to go get it too!

I may be starting a war here but in my next life I'm going to become an auto shop owner. I work for an engineering firm and our per hour rates for experienced survey and field personel are cheaper than theshop labor rates around here. ($52 - $57 vs. $60) Whenever I have a client bitch about their bill I'm going to tell them to get their car fixed at a garage!

I feel your pain in the wallet. I found the oem pump at RockAuto for $290, they have the best prices online if you can wait for a few days, but when you break down on the road your a sitting duck

I might ad that those guys that are charged out at $52-$57 have a three multiplier i.e. 52/3=$17.33; 57/3=$19.00. That's what these guys make per hour. I know full well that the local mechanics around here don't make even close to that. I have several friends that work for independent shops and one that works for a Chev garage.

Not to rant anymore but, the wife had the Blazer which develped a bad vibration while driving. She brought it in to the stealers garage it turns out the vacuum switch on the transfer case was bad allowing vacuum to pass all the time thus rotating the front driveshaft all the time. The bad joint in the front drive shaft (which I was going to replace that night) caused all the vibration.

The stealer wanted $136 to replace the switch, and not the joint. (Book time = 0.6 hours) They charged her $36 diagnostic time. I replaced the POS for $14.00 and 0.5 hours!

I am done ranting.
