Default Fuel Pump Gouge?

My Blazer wouldn't start. I dumped a little gas directly in under the hood there and it turned over a few times and then stopped. I figured fuel pump. Had it towed to a shop where guys have normally treated me pretty well. They told me it was the fuel pump, but stated that they had to buy a whole assembly for the tank and some other bull****. Said the part was going to be $600 and labour $150 for three hours work. I haven't told them to go ahead with it yet because that seems damn high for a pump...but I don't know. I have a 1999 Blazer 2dr 4x4.

Find out if its a ac delco or delphi assembly,if not tell them to stop what they are doing and buy only the ac delco or delphi assemblies. They trucks like nothing less. but for 600 im sure it is one of the 2...which is about right if tey are buying it from the dealership. just 3 hours labor?? i remember mine taking longer...more power to them if they can do it in 3!

150 for labor is a bargain..usually you get charged 300+parts. The Pump runs around 350 and the retaining ring that tends to corrode that hold the pump to the tank is 40-50. I'm not sure what other parts you need but you're not getting ripped off.

People should understand that service companies typically double their parts cost as 'price'. That's so they can keep their labor rates perceptively lower.
- Why they dont like it when you walk in with the part
In the case of auto parts, I would imagine they cant buy them much cheaper than the guy off the street - due to competition.
Added for the future reader:
Okay.. now call around and see if you can get an AC D or Delphi pump assy cheaper than $300. And then think.. time to fix an assembly and the common cases where there's something else can fail or has failed. In your case the 2x2 harness connector which is why all replacements come with the new style 1x4 connector.

Remember, if anything goes wrong with a repair they usually have to eat the labor costs and, often, some of the parts costs.
- That's especially true in residential heating/air. I know that first hand.

^^ Yep and i learned myself 1st hand,I purchased a fuel pump myself (a airtex) and gave it to the mechanic only because i wanted to avoid the higher price markup. That pump died 2 weeks later..and i was stuck with a tow bill and the cost of having it done again since he didnt buy the part..

Later to find out he said if he would of purchased it,the labor would of been on him. OH and,he said there would be no price mark up..

As well,i learned about quality of fuel pumps many pumps later.

That price for the pump sounds about right from the dealer, when I bought my Blazer it had the sending unit bad wich is on the fuel pump so I asked at the dealer for a new pump and they told me 584.95, I still have a bad sending unit. and for about 3 hours to change it, if you have the right tools and skills it can be done.
