Default Fuel pump wiring connector woes

Here I am again. I finally got my fuel pump replaced, and everything put back together. I had already changed the harness connector last time the fuel pump was replaced, it still looked good, voltage tested well, so I didn't replace it this time. Plugged it in, pulled a little to check it was secure, and it came unplugged! I tried several times thinking I just didn't have it pushed in enough. Looking closer and comparing to the plug that came with new pump, I see the retaining clip has a little piece broken off at the center.... aggghh! So, do I drop the tank again and replace the whole harness end, or is there any way possible to release the wires and insert them into the new plug?

Also, does anybody know the really correct way to unplug this connector from pump? Took me forever and ended up wiggling/prying the little gray safety clip out with my pocket knife (the one that clips in under the release tab for plug). Then I must not have pressed the release tab down enough, or maybe the plastic was brittle and that center piece broke off when I reconnected. Pictures of new plug for reference. This was one of the hardest parts for me, to get the darn thing unplugged without much visibility, so maybe a mini tutorial might help others in the future 🤞

This is the old safety clip. I used the new one thinking it was the problem, and then realized the inside retaining clip was broken.

Red arrow is where the little piece is broken out at the center of the old connector.

This looks to be one of the following: Delphi 15326815 GT 150 Series, 4 Way Sealed Female Connector (https://theelectricaldepot.com/weath...male-connector)

From this, you should be able to find replacement plugs along with information on how to de-pin the connectors so that you can swap them to the new plug. I suspect the small holes below the larger ones are where a tool is inserted to replace the metal female receptacles. And it is possible that the Metri-Pack 150 removal tool is the one that will work. (You can find these on eBay and where these connectors are sold)

DELETED and reposted

These GM plugs will have parts that are designed keep the electrical pins and sockets in place and sometimes also clips that lock the retaining mechanism in place so that the plug will stay connected.

For this one, the grey one is likely for holding the pins/sockets in place and the white one could be the clip for locking the retaining mechanism.

As you look more closely online at these for sale, you'll learn which are which.

I finally searched for the correct term "depin" and found this video that shows the exact same connector. (Hope video links are allowed.) There probably is a tool that would poke through the smaller holes to release the pins, but removing the cap made it really easy. So I'm answering my own question in case somebody else needs this info. Still wondering if there's an easier way to get that safety clip off though... 🤔

Thanks for that info. I'll go look at that website and check out the removal tool too. Even though I found the video, I can always use more tools 😂

If the part matches, you can get a replacement body for the plug with a retaining tab.

I used the body from the new plug that came with the new fuel pump. Was able to watch video and practice depinning while sitting in my recliner, lol. So it wasn't too difficult to replace it under the car since it's still on jack stands. 😁
