Default Fuel Tanks Size '98

Hello, I have a 98 4 door blazer (ls I think, it's at the mechanic's) recently my fuel pump went out, so I bought a fuel pump for an 18 gallon fuel tank, because that was what the manual indicated it should be for the 4-door blazer. I got a call from my mechanic saying it wasn't the right size for the tank, so I'm wondering what other size fuel tanks the '98 blazer would have come with? Is there a way to find out by using the vin? My car is an automatic, but the vin decoder at http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDecoder.asp is saying that it is a manual transmission. (
1GNDT13W9WK145251) which actually would have a 19 gallon tank according to edmunds. I'm just lost at this point, any ideas as to what's going on here?

Compnine.com's VIN decoder lists your truck as an automatic. FYI, no 4dr 2nd gen ever came with the manual transmission stock.

Per the owners manual, the 4dr has an 18 gallon tank while the 2dr has a 19 gallon tank.

Yep, 18 gal for the 4 door.
Guess that's a 'fail' for Edmunds.

I'm thinking that perhaps it's a fail for NAPA. I'm guessing that the problem I was facing was that they arrange their fuel pumps by "w/18 gallon" and "except 18 gallon" fuel tanks. I think that their 18 gallon fuel pumps are for the plastic tanks, because the "except 18 gallon" pump that I just bought seemed to fit in my metal tank okay. This is the part that wouldn't fit http://partimages.genpt.com/largeimages/786285.jpg , and this is the part that did http://partimages.genpt.com/largeimages/786257.jpg . Anybody have any ideas, or encounter this before? Is there a way to tell from the vin what type of tank you are supposed to have? Thanks.

Different pumps used for the plastic & steel tanks.
Here are the Airtex part numbers for your 98:

2 Door - E3954M

4 Door W/ Plastic Tank - E3992M

4 Door W/ Steel Tank - E3953M

Unless you want to be replacing your pump frequently, I would stay away from Airtex. They have been known for their short life span.

Good to know. I haven't heard any opinions one way or another on the Airtex pumps so your point is good to keep in mind. I wasn't recommending Airtex, just using the part numbers as a reference for the different pumps.
