Default Gas gauge problem?

I have a 1997 Blazer 4.3l 255/70/15 tires and it seems my gas gauge is off. When I fill up I make sure I get the most I can in up to the cap about 17 gals. I drive and drive with very little moving and I get 200 miles out of little over 1/2 tank but once it hits 1/2 I only get like 50 more miles or so whats up with that? I am lucky to get 250 out of a full tank but seem to get 200 out of 1/2 tank. Is this just the gauge catching up or is something wrong because I am out of gas when it says I am. I have a flowmaster, k & n air intake, and run regular synthetic oil changes. I dont understand but if I am some how losing those miles how do I get them back?

You aren't losing the miles, it is just the inconsistancy of the fuel gauge from full to empty. Mine does it as well, although mine has started to jump around a lot lately meaning it's time to replace the sender.

Lots of vehicles have a problem with inconsistent fuel sending units.

The fuel gauge problem in by '98 Blazer is different, and I'd appreciate any help you can give. The gauge was jumping then finaly died. I dropped the 18 gallon plastic fuel tank and replaced the fuel pump and gauge sending unit. Still no gauge... Is there a ground somewhere that might be bad?

Thanks

Tom

I find it a little annoying that its such an expensive fix for a common problem in these Vehicles. I am new to the blazer community, and I have an older 1995 Blazer but having the fuel gauge that moves all over the place bugs me. I guess I will just use the trip meter for now, unless I can find some where to do the fix. Since mine is an early second gen, is there a difference in what needs to be done to fix this issue? Mine moves all over the place while Im driving.

Also, has anyone tried the SPECTRA PREMIUM brand from rockauto.com for a replacement sender unit? Its the Fuel Sender, Float and Strainer for $70.

When it comes to the Fuel Pump/Sending Unit only buy OEM, same in, same out really. I heard bad stories about anything else. Myself having a "better engineered" fuel pump and sender die after 2 days being in the truck. Its not worth it. I have put all new genuine fuel pump and sender in not giving me any problems and fixing my gauge.
