As of a two or three weeks ago, my gas guage is no longer accurate below half a tank. When I fill the tank, the needle indicates FULL.

But I've run the tank out of gas twice now, thinking I had half a tank of gas. It doesn't want to read below half a tank or so, and the idiot light never comes on.

Is this a problem with the sending unit in the tank? Do they have to drain the tank, drop the tank, and replace the sending unit?

Or could it be in the guage cluster?

Anyone else have this problem?

Imagine running out of gas, when you think you have half a tank of gas! Then it dawns on me to switch from odometer to trip odometer, and I realize I've driven 300 miles on this tank!

Yep, run the tank low, drop it and change the sending unit. You can now get just the sending unit. They are a common problem.

 

Depending on what year you are working with, on the 96+ vehicles, you may be able to verify the accuracy of the gauge with a tech2 or equivalent scan tool.

This is mostlikely a problem with your sending unit. And yes, the tank must be dropped to change out the sending unit.

 

Same thing happened to me. Changed the whole fuel pump cause I got a deal on it, but it fixed the problem.

 

so you can really just buy the sending unit now?? i have the exact same problem it wont read below half a tank and when sitting still the needle is all over the place. ive been dealing with it beacause i didnt want to pay for the sending unit and fuel pump as one part.

where can you purchase the sending units at?

 

The dealer will have a replacement sending unit, PN 19121300 (for your 2000 - I am unable to verify the PN for other years). I am unsure of any aftermarket source... You could get it from GMPartsDirect.com ($72 +s&h), but get hit with high shipping charges and long lead times, or try someplace like RockAuto.com ($78 +s&h)...
