Default help TDC on compression, but rotor not pointing to #1

my 2001 jimmy, i am doing the intake gaskets. it ran fine but did have a po300 (even passed ct. emissions last year ),, i lined up both marks on the balancer, but the rotor is not pointing to the (6) on the distributor. its off about one inch....so i had already purchased a new Delphi dist. BUT do i put it in the same way or do it the way the book shows? thank you for any advise

When I did my intake gaskets I had a similar problem. When I tried putting the distributor back in, it would be off by quite a bit.

I realized that it was off by one tooth on the cam. I also realized that what was preventing me from getting in on the right tooth was the that oil pump driveshaft slot was not aligned correctly.

I was able to use my super big flat-blade screw-driver, think small prybar sized, to rotate the oil pump drive shaft back just enough to allow the distributor to engage with the correct tooth on the cam shaft.

BTW, I am assuming the crank hasn't been rotated, otherwise you'll have to find TDC and likely need to do a crank position relearn.

Hope this helps.

thanks, I haven't removed the dist. yet,i just dont understand why the rotor is not pointing at little #6,i am going to test for tdc on #1 with a whistle tool ,i have read where the harmonic balancer has been know to spin/slip on itself?...i did this job on my grandsons 98 jimmy last year, and had no problem like this...ONE other thing, brand Delphi distributor doesn't even have that paint mark on the housing?

Ah ok. Keep us posted.

As for the mark on the Delphi distributors, I don't know.

ok,up and running....the balancer has defiantly turned on itself...set it tdc compression with rotor pointing at the mini 6,marked it as i removed it, marked the new distributor the same...dropped right in and runs good....waiting to see if i get a check eng light. Wondering about that crank sensor relearn?, is it always necessary? ...ONE more time for emissions in October
