Ok my 97 jimmy will not start when i turn the key to the on position the radio and the compass turn on but no lights on the dash then usually after about 8 to 10 seconds the dash lights come on and then i can start it right up. i am thinking it might have something to do with the ignition switch or something like that but i am not sure nor do i know where it is. If any one can help that would be great since right now my car is in my driveway not starting. this has been going on for about 3 weeks now but has never been this bad also sometimes when im driving it just shuts off and starts back up again or i have to turn the key again thanks in advance

 

I don't know if the '97 has a code chip in the key, if it does that could be the problem. Do you have another key and have you tried that one?
Just an idea 'cause I don't have an answer.

 

Might have to check to see if your's had the recall or TBS for the ignition wire replacement (due to it shorts out and can cause fire) they also had on for the brake wires too (From the sending unit on the peddle).

 

sounds like ignition switch problem or wiring thee. There is no chip in the key on your Jimmy, at least not until 1998.
