light goes out fault code still shows
I've been chasing the dreaded 0410 and I think I have it fixed. My CEL went off on my way home from work this morning. I did a quick check when I got home. the code was still there. I figured I might have to restart the car, so I checked again after I took my daughter to school. still there. The light works, or at least it comes on with all the other lights when I first start. Does this mean the code is ready to clear, or is something else up?
I've also been waiting for the catalyst test to run. It is usually one of the first tests to run. what could be holding that one up?
I usually reset the codes when I think I have a problem fixed, but I did it the way I was told is the proper way and waited for them to reset themselves.

per Alldata for code P0410:
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
- The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
- A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.
- A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.
- Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool.

It is still a current fault, so I guess that it means that the problem still exists, and the light is teasing me. since the test doesn't run with every ignition cycle especially in warm weather, it is hard for me to guess how many times it has actually run. wish there was an easy way to know the results each and every time the test has run.
Do you know how that relates to a smog check? I've got the AZ manager, don't know if I trust him, telling me to reset it and do another drive cycle, because a historic code will fail me. but I've heard different. I'd rather not reset it, because I'm already 10 days overdue for my registration. the best thing I suppose would be to ask the smog guy.
The requirements for clearing the DTC that DesertStorm posted, are correct. If all of the monitors are complete, and the light is off, there are no faults present, and the vehicle should pass. You can manually clear all files with a capable scan tool, (not all scan tools are capable of clearing the history file) and perform a General Motors Driving Cycle Keep in mind that the EVAP and secondary air monitors can be tricky to complete, and without them being complete, the vehicle will fail.
depends on the State that he is in. In NY, you are allowed 2 monitors incomplete on a 1996 to 2000 vehicle. On a 2001 and up you are 'allowed' one monitor incomplete. That's NY, I can't speak for any other state. I am a licensed inspector. Jerry
Yep different in Mass. also
Yeah, I'm allowed 1 test not to run, usually it is the evap test, which is lucky I have an intermittent small vacuum leak, cant remember the code. For some reason this time it is the catalyst and evap.
perumotors1369 Just to be clear, historic codes should be cool right, since they mean that the problem was present but is now fixed right?
