Default Limited Slip or Locker

I have a 1996 Blazer that currently has an open differential. It's a 3.42 4x4. But i live in MN, and i'd like to give it a rear locker or at least an LSD. My other truck has an Eaton G80 and i'm told S10s sometiems came factory with them as well. Could i get some details on this? How much would i need to spend? I do'nt need an $800 locker. i'd like to keep it under $300, likely used or rebuilt. I realize that's not the best budget but i do see some full sized truck G80s on ebay rebuilt for about $250 with a warranty, so i think it shouldn't be too tough for a smaller version. I'm open to other brands too, no problem with a Detroit or Powertrax. Just want what's gonna give me the most for my money. This truck doesn't do much offroading, so no need to go overboard. It just needs to do better in the snow instead of this one wheel in the front/one in the back nonsense.

Thanks!

I don't know. It's stock and it's the GU6 (3.42).

A standard LockRight locker from Summit Racing is the best choice. They are relatively easy to install, tough, and simple. No special lube is required, no carrier setup is necessary, and they work good. Detailed instructions will come with the parts.

I just did this swap in may 95. I found a GU6(3:42 gear) rear with the G80(locker) option at a salvage yard for $125. The rear was from a 2000 so now I have a locking rear plus rear disk(love them) for under $200, including the one caliper I had to go get. The disk swap was really easy, I didn't even have to change the master or propotioning valve, bolt it in....bleed it...drive it! Depending on where you are in MN I could help you with the swap if you need it.

Good luck

Hadn't thought about the whole axle swap for disc brakes. That would be nice. What does it entail to swap out axles?

I'm in Faribault MN actually, about an hour south of Minneapolis, or 35minutes south of Lakeville.

It was simple. Unbolt the drive shaft, unbolt the rear from the springs, undo the flexable brake line, remove the axle. Install is the reverse plus bleed the brakes. Now it seems to me that you can use up a 2000 rear axle for this with no other brake changes. I installed a 2000 rear in mine and had the change nothing else. Admittedly I did get lucky with the rear, the yard didn't know it was the G80.
Look on www.car-parts.com to look for a rear.
