Liquid Locking - Fuel Overload

Liquid Locking - Fuel Overload
Hey guys, I'm a Dodge man so I'm hoping you Chevy guys
can help me out. I'm sure ya'll seen it & delt with it already.
I now have a 1996 Chevy Blazer LT 4.3L 4x4. This thing has
been total pain in my *** so far. I used to own a 91 S10
pickup, clearly these's LT's don't share the same heart as
thye S10's even though it's pretty much the same thing.
Anyway's, here's the issue:
My next project bringing this thing back from the grave is it's
fuel system. It take's 7 - 9 cranks for the engine to turn over.
Sometimes it will pop over after 2 - 4 but its rare.
It's also has been using fuel like it's free. I checked the trouble codes,
so far all that pops up is the three that corresponds to the three
O2's. I know they're shot & yes fuel millage goes into the toilet.
I've seen severe cases of this before in my own Dakota, when both
failed, I'd use a tank of fuel a week just going to work. I only worked
2 miles away. Although this thing drinks $20 worth in ten miles.
I was, I.E. was, trying to fix the crank issue, I've read some post's
on it here & got some insight. The fuel pressure is adequate for this
truck, the lines have no restriction, the tank doesn't build to much
pressure. No extra trouble codes. I read here it could be caused by
the fuel pressure regulator. I decided to change it. Here are picture's
of the originals condition:
The Spider condition wasn't very hot either. Injectors were horribly
crummy too. I cleaned everything up & put it back together shown in these pictures:
NOTE: Yes I know in the picture the fuel pressure regulator
is upside down, I corrected the problem before putting
everything back together.
All new Plentum gasket set installed.
Now here's the problem:
After doing this the first time, the engine jammed
after the third crank. Yeah, I almost sh*# my pants.
I thought it was the starter. It sounded like it was
stripping teeth from the fly wheel. Long story short,
it wasn't that. In a panic I tore it back down looking
into the ports with a flash light to see if I dropped
anything, I was sure I didn't, I had all ports plugged
with paper towels. Besides a small piece of paper
towel being in there, I used throttle body cleaner.
Of course I didn't see anything but got one hell of
a whiff of gas. I decided to pull the spark plugs &
sure enough, three out of six cylinders were plum
full. About a gallon of gas poured out total from all
three holes. I've never seen that before. And I know
there has to be gas in the oil pan now. I thought
mabey I got way to much gas in when purging so I
drained it by opening all the spark plug holes & hit
the starter. Starter made no abnormal noise either.
I put the plugs back in, turn the key once, after the
third crank, she locked up again. I pulled the plugs,
she was over full again on fuel.
At this point I'm thinking the injectors are shot. I over
to B&H & got another complete spider. "used of course".
That one was in worse condition so I cleaned it & put
the new fuel pressure regulator on it. It did the same
thing on the third crank.
I called around & got multiple "could be's".
Advance: check the carb, could be wide open.
The butterflies stay mostly closed.
O'Rielly's: Lot of problems with the older spiders,
update it.
Autozone: pull the wire harness from the spider
& try to start it. It "could be" the ECM opening
three ports wide open. I did that, no differance,
locked up on the third crank.
Yesterday I got so pissed I pushed it out of the
garage & it hit the house. I don't really care at
this point.
Any idea's guys?

See that's the thing, noone seems to have heard of this. But then again I can't be the first to have this issue. If this hadent happened to myself i wouldnt even believe its possible. as far as advance goes, its just the typical know nothings behind a computer. if it aint on that computer, they know nothing of it

Try to work through the steps in this thread: 96+ Fuel System Diagnosisand see what the various pressure readings lead you to, but I'm going to guess that it's either a leaking regulator or the poppets are shot.
You don't have a carburetor.

Okay, the problem is half solved. It's alive... kinda.
I thought about what spittybays said about the
regulator. I sh*$ canned it. I went back to B&H
& swapped out the original one & got the newer
updated one. I also used the regulator it came
with. Suprisingly this spider is in fair condition.
Seems to be doing a hell of a lot better than
the other one. She isnt filling the cylinders &
jamming up. Although now I have to pump the
peddle & crank it about 10 times & she will fire.
Runs like crap though. I'm hoping thats due too
the gas in the oil. I noticed I have a magore
leak in the check valve that connects into the
valve cover & runs to the booster. Needs an
O-ring. I have the tune up parts, I'm syre that
would help too. As many times as I had too
remove the spark plugs, they aint so hot anymore.
I'm gonna dump that oil ASAP.
By the way, I tried to get a good image of the
gas build up. The cylinders were so full the air
intake was a lake.

That brake booster is the largest vac line on the whole motor. If you have a leak there I don't care what kind of parts you put in the thing is going to run, if at all, like complete dog sh*t. Anyway glad it was the bad reg dumping the fuel. See if you can get your money back.
Pics are nice but unless theres something specific it makes for a long scroll.

Thank you guys for all your help!!!
Problem done & solved.
After replacing the oil & a full tune up,
PVC valve & check valve o-ring replacement,
shes running like a champ now. 2 - 3 cranks
& she turns over. I think I found the whole
reason this took place too. Wrong fuel pressure
regulator. RockAuto: STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # PR203T
The two configurations are VERY different.
And this is what RockAuto has listed for a
1996 Chevy Blazer 4.3L.
The two old & the new updated spider has
the same regulator. I guess caution when
purchusing from RockAuto. RockAuto has
awesome prices but I guess not everything
is dead on. Everything else I bought from them
so far for this truck works like a champ. This is
the first mess up. Thank you guys again for your
Support & suggestions. I hope this thread helps
someone else in the future so they wont go through
what I did. This was very FUBR!!!
BTW spittybays, you're seriously right about that vac line.
I replaced that o-ring. I tried to start it without the line
hooked up, it didn't run like sh*%, it tried to blow its self
up. Apon turnover, the engine about maxed it's RPM's. I
had to kill the engine, it would not lower the RPM's. I hope
noone has to go through this crap.

Thanks for post
Philbilly, thanks for posting such a detailed discription w/photos. I am having the exact same problem this weekend. I have gone thru the same steps as you with the same poor results including giving up in frustration.Didn't hit the house though when pushing it out of the garage! guess I will have to push it back in and try again.
