Around here you would need to provide vehicle registration papers and ~$80 at the dealership for a new key.

Call your local Chevy dealer and ask them about a new key.

I am struggling to determine how a key that works the ignition will not open the door provided that you previously had a key that would do both... The doors use only around half of the tumblers that the ignition uses so it would follow that if it works the ignition, it should work the door... Heck, the keys for my old 2001 Bonneville would unlock the doors to my wifes old company car, a 2002 Olds Alero.

Ok Ive been reading articles regarding the RKE unit, now if I go to a salvage yard and pull one out of a 97' blazer will it work with a remote from another GM?

you need to make sure the fcc id# on the rke and the remote both match or they will not work together however ebay is great for this, if you get the rke you can get a remote off ebay for $10 brand new my truck had keyless entry but no remotes i just got the fcc id# and hit ebay (even came with programming instructions so simple a second grader could do it
