My blazer has 149,330 on the clock.

I was thinking about it (and being laid off gives me time to think, unfortuanatly), I cleaned the MAF sensor last year.

I did not have a SES light.

something was not right they way it idled and performance.

So I went to a junk yard, and believe me they know me there and when I walked in the owner saw me and told me that he just got in a "Fresh" 2001 Blazer and I'm like Cool!!!!

I pulled the MAF sensor and the senson that is on the passenger side that plugs in to the top of the valve cover.

The "Fresh" blazer had 75K on the clock.

So the owner charged me 20.00 for the MAF sensor and the little sensor he just laughed and said many people would of just pocketed it.. so 20.00 for both.

I installed them both there as I was BSing with the owner.

The little sensor I took out of my Blazer the rubber was disintergrated so the new one the rubber was perfect.

The MAF sensor I installed in my blazer was original BUT the one I took out of MY blazer the owner looked at it and showed me on the bottom it said "Reman".

So I leave and noticed a BIG difference!!!! I took it on the highway and it seems to me to be more responsive and gas mileage is a little better, I do get good gas mileage even before I did the swap.

So my question is: does the MAF sensor when it is going give crappy performance even though It never gave a SES light?

Yes, issues with the MAF can definitely affect performance. They can be sometimes be subtle and not set a DTC.

 

And would a shot MAF sensor affect the transmission as well?

 

I don't think there is a direct correlation.

 

Yes on both accounts. It will affect both the engine and the transmission. The MAF sensor data is used to assess engine load which is used in determining the proper line pressure. Shifts can be delayed and sloppy when the MAF sensor degrades.
