The steel line and unions are meant to repair the damaged section of the original line. If you replace the entire line, you'll need the special fitting on the filter end and at the connection at the rear of the plenum. It would be easier and cheaper to just repair the damaged section of line. When you cut the steel line, use a tubing cutter. Use the damaged piece as a template for bending the new piece.
