when was your last tune up? At 168,000 miles, youd be in dire need of some internal cleaning, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, egr cleaning, throttle body cleaning, and all your driveline fluids..

Oh ok. Did this come on suddenly or has it always been that way? Does your temp gauge run just under 200 degrees? A stuck open thermostat will give poor milage. I dont know what kind of tire you are running but I just went from 31" BFG all-terrains to 31" BFG mud-terrains and lost 2 mpg on the highway. MTs have a higher rolling resistance. Right now I am getting 16 - 16.5 mpg hwy. You probably just need to do a tune up (cap, rotor, plugs and wires, fuel filter). Be sure to use ac delco spark plugs.

Are your tires properly inflated? Make sure your catalytic converter is not clogged. Clean the MAF sensor... to do this, remove the unit from truck, remove the honeycomb looking screen and throw it away. Spray throttle plate cleaner on the small delicate wire sensors... DO NOT touch them. While your at it, cut up or drill holes in your air box so that air can flow freely into your K&N filter. All that is usually worth about 2 mpg.

I never heard of drilling holes in the air box, does it really help?? Does not seem like that would pull that much more air in.
