Just replaced wheel bearing Saturday and everything seemed great until I started getting that damn noise again yesterday. Engaging my 4x4 will stop it immediately but is only a temporary fix.

I would like to figure out what the cause is to get it repaired in case it is doing other damage which is more expensive.

Check the Tech Article link in my signature and look for a post titled something like "Clicks in 2wd, goes away in 4wd".

If you have the NV233 transfer case, (3 button dash switch), the vacuum switch on the transfer case is leaking internally. 20 minute, cheap fix. GM latest and greatest updated part number is: 89059420. Dorman has a less expensive version available at most auto parts stores for under $20. I know this thread has been dead for a while now but I think I finally figured out the noise was coming from my starter.
The wire rotted off my starter a few weeks ago and once replaced I haven't heard the noise since.

I replaced both hub bearings and vacuum switch and had a friend of mine check it over after hearing it himself and he was clueless, my best guess is the starter wasn't fully disengaging and power wire may have been arcing or something pushing it against the flywheel, as for it stopping when I put it in 4x4 I have no idea how that had any effect but it worked..

Figured id post my findings to try and help anyone else

Do hub bearings cause a thumpy feel, like a flat spot on the tire?

Sounds like a failed bearing. It`s important to keep these bad boys greased atleast once a year. When it comes to having a 4x4 model..Mud,sand and dirt are the main reason`s bearings fail.
