Default Mystery Fuel Tube (2003 4-door)

I was installing a trailer hitch my 2003, 4WD, 4-door, and broke a plastic tube connection labeled "Fuel" that attaches to a box behind the left rear wheel between the fender and the frame. The box is about the size of an ammo box, and has several lines/tubes coming out of it. The tube connection that I broke attaches to the rear of the box. No fluid came out. The connection is an actual flange component of the box's casing meaning the entire box casing may need to be replaced.

I've not been able to find any information in a Chilton manual or online. Can someone tell me what this is, what it does, and how critical it is to fix the broken connection?

Thanks

Yep, it's the charcoal canister. If you can, just epoxy the break back together. You have to be sure that you seal up the system or you will get a check engine light and possibly fail your inspection if your location has them.
