Default need assistance

I have a 1996 blazer and recently I couldn't start my truck in park because the bar was not lite under it, the mechanic said oh that must be your censor( and they are extremely expensive) just turn key out in neutral and it will start, so I was doing that until I found out how much a sensor costs and as of yesterday not I have no reverse same thing the lite is not lite underneath it. Can anyone please help me and give me an idea as to what it maybe and around how much it will cost? Where I am from and being female the mechanics always try to stiff me and charge me more because I don't know what they are talking about.

Are you referring to the neutral safety switch?

If it is the neutral safety switch you can pick one up on Rock Auto for under $30 and install it yourself in about 30 minutes easily with no special tools other than a simple socket set required. The other common failure with these is that the shift cable will go bad and need replacement. I had the same issue and did a write up on how to do it if your interested in trying to tackle it yourself.
