I'm no expert, but when my fuel pump went a month ago it was good one second and dead the next. Sounds like yours died more slowly. Pumps in general don't usually die slowly. I'd agree that a good diagnostic is in order. If you had a CEL, then simply read the codes to help find the cause. It maight not pinpoint it, but it will help.
