Default Need HELP Identifying What This Does? // 96 Blazer

Hey Guys -

I haven't posted in a while but I have a 96 4dr Blazer 4x4 with the 4.3 motor. I swapped out my 4x4 vaccum accuator for a position lock manul cable system, and wanted to clean up some loose ends in the engine bay. Can anyone identify what this part is near the battery where the old accuater was under the battery tray that it removed? It is mounted on top of the rad overflow tank. I was hoping its safe to remove it and also the harness that runs back behind the brake master cyl. I currently have it unplugged and don't notice any issues, but wanted to ask here before I get rid of it.

Thanks guys your input is greatly appreciated.

See pics below.

It was a recall GM performed in regards to the ABS/4wd system..I believe you could 'google' GM 96 Blazer ABS/4wd recall, put in your vin and read about exactly what was done/what it does..Jerry

Looks like Jerry has done a few of these campaigns!

Relocated vacuum operated switch that tells the PCM when vehicle is in 4WD or 2WD for the purpose of ABS. Apparently too many failures due to moisture/freezing damaging them. If your ABS is functional I would keep this hooked up so you can stop well!

Awesome! I have it unhooked now and the harness goes down to where I have the new posi-lock cable installed on the tcase. Thinking of removing that as well. I've had an abs light on for years and never could find the source to the issue (this I am assuming could be the culprit). Stopping power is not a concern with stainless braided lines and upgraded 98+ knuckles and dual piston calipers up front which has been night and day since I did the upgrade.

I will definitely check out that link and read up more. I want to remove it all, as I already removed all the cruise control crap since I'll never use it.

I also traced the vacuum hose it was hooked up to and seems to go down towards the 3 prong vaccum accuator but I just plugged it off for now and no issues. Also unhooked with the posi-lock cable it goes in 4hi and 4lo just fine. I have the 96 with np231 and the floor shift not the electronic push botton btw.

Anyone else with experience feel free to chime in. Thanks for all of your help guys I really appreciate it.
