Default Oi over filled by..?

So i just decided to check my oil today and saw that the shop who changed it last (i know i know do my own..) over filled it. The oil came up to abut a half inch over the operating dash marks.

Im not sure how overfilled this is, but supposedly for the 20$ i paid the shop puts in up to 5 quarts, any more is extra. So what i think they did is put in 5 quarts instead of the 4 or 4.5 like they were supposed to. But a half inch over the full line seems like more that 5 quarts..

So will this do any harm besides make my engine a little more sluggish because the crank has to turn through more oil?

According to the owner manual, the crosshatch is proper operating area, more than that 'can damge your engine'.
When in doubt, take it out. Might do to just pull oil filter and drain it. Doubt 1/4 inch is deadly.

They also say when it gets to 'add' mark put in at least one quart. I slap my forehead if it gets there. and have to admit, I've run engines with oil half inch above.
