I think M is used for both thousand, and million and a bunch of other things depending on the field one is working in.
I've usually seen K used when abbreviating 1000 miles, or potassium, or as a lazy way to respond to a text...

A real metrimathmetician would never use M to represent K nor would they use blue to represent tadpole. (To convert hues to amphibians you must first carry the beer and then divide by the local exchange rate.) For those of us who didn't grow up with the metric system... 250M miles is 250 million miles. 250K = 250 thousand... (K = kilo... kilo = ... say it... SAY IT!... c'mon SAY IT... ' thousand ' . )
I'm assuming some Cannucks accidentally discovered the SAE innerwebs & their metric routers malfunctioned (with a giant poke to my friend in Manitoba ). Add more beer.
