Smile Oil Filter for 1996 Blazer I 6

not sure if this is a S series or what. all I know is this is a 1996 Chev Blazer. Owner's manual has been gone for years.
My question is: what product # is the oil filter. Which is recommended? Thanks

Paul

In this thread you say you have an owner's manual. It should tell you whether the vehicle is an S-series or not, what type engine is in it, and list the factory oil filter number which can be cross referenced at any auto supply store.

Is it a four wheel drive?

If yes, do the wheels have 5 lug nuts or 6? If 5 lug nuts its an S10 Blazer. If 6 lug nuts its a K5, or Tahoe (at one time the K5's were "blazers", at some point the small ones became blazers and big ones became Tahoes).

Anyway, look at the engine. Does it have exhaust manifolds and spark plug wires on both sides of the engine? If yes its not an "I" type enging (inline), its a "V" type engine.

Does the engine have 3 wires going to each side of the engine or 4. If 3 its a 4.3 liter V6. If 4 spark plug wires on each side it could be a 305 V8 or a 350 V8.

If you have the 4.3 liter V6 and its really a 96 then it uses a
AC PF52 or the equivalent made by another company (I have a 96 Chevy S10 Blazer)

If you have a 305 or 350 then it uses a
AC PF 52 (according to Advance Auto Parts search)

You know your stuff re the Blazer. 5 Lugs on the wheel, which makes it S10. The engine has so much covering it, I could not see any wires, so I went below and looked up. Indeed I have a Y exhaust making this a V engine. I searched Edmond's site and brought up 1996 Blazers. In the drop down menu they had Base and LT models listed in several engine types. All V6s though. You have helped with the mystery of what this vehicle is. Thank you

Now that you know what you have you originally asked about oil filter brands. I personally use WIX filters. The NAPA Auto NAPA Gold is the same filter. Can't go wrong with AC or Purolater either. You should stay away from the orange Fram oil filters. Probably the most common brand you'll find but it is a cheaply made filter.
