Default Oil pressure gauge goes from normal to zero periodically.

Hey everyone, on my 2001 chevy blazer v6 the oil gauge periodically drops to zero then will go back to normal. It will do this several times while im driving and it will sometimes stay all the way at zero for a long time before it comes back. Besides a faulty oil pump what else could cause this to happen? Could it be a cracked gasket? Or any other ideas would be great thanks.

It could be the sending unit, unless you hear the engine sound different at 0psi. If the engine changes sound when its at 0psi there could be something floating in the pan that plugs the pickup sometimes.

Hook a mechanical pressure gauge to the connector at the oil pressure sending unit (top rear of the engine near the distributor) and verify the pressure readings. If the mechanical gauge shows normal, then the problem is with the sending unit.

Mine does the opposite, when fully warmed up and driving it goes from like 45 psi and pegs all the way up and goes back to where it should be, I am not to worried about it since its either a loose connection in the cluster or the oil pressure sensor acting up

Over fill on the oil can make the gage drop to 0, the crank whips the oil and the pump sucks up the bubbles. I know of this happening to some one b/c he got tired of having to add oil to his oil burner all the time.
