oil sending unit

Default oil sending unit

i'm trying to replace the oil sending unit in my 98 blazer and have been told that the distributor needs to be removed. how do i do that without messing up timing and is it possible to change the unit without removing it?

i just finished it anyway. no u dont have to remove the distributor but it can be a pain in the *** if u dont. but no it's not completely necessary
