03 2 dr with a 00 4dr engine
I had some overheating problems a couple months ago and since summer classes let out at college I was finally able to get my vehicle to my mechanic. Turns out that I had a cracked head, a bad cam rod, and a clogged coolant system. Well the day after he tells me this, he tows in a totaled blazer with an engine that only has 55k miles on it. So I just had him inspect that one and bought it off the guy and had it installed for a steal... I get it back today and it overheated while idling in traffic.
I personally replaced the the water pump last month before bringing it to the mechanic since it went out and I thought it was my overheating problem but it turned out to be the cracked head. I also had the mechanic install a new radiator while he was replacing the engine to eliminate that being an issue later down the road.
So I figure that it is most likely an issue with my fan clutch, thermostat, or an air bubble. Both of the hoses are hot to the touch and normal idling temps so I assume that the thermostat is working as intended but not entirely sure.
I am confused though if it could be the fan clutch or not. I mean it turns on while idling at normal temperatures with the AC on and off. When I turn off the vehicle though it takes it around 5-7 revolutions for the fan to come to a complete stop. I can turn it while it is hot by my hand with a tad bit of effort and it will turn maybe a fourth of the way and stop.
I also thought of maybe an air bubble in the system but I don't really know the symptoms of something like that. Like wouldn't you face overheating all the time with something like that?
Going to get in touch with my mechanic tomorrow to see if he bled the system and installed a new thermostat but I am wanting a few more opinions on the matter and see what you all think it could be.

Sounds like the fan clutch is bad, by the way you say it spins. This link explains how it works and how to test it: Learn about how the fan clutch works from howstuffinmycarworks If in fact it's bad, replace it with a "Severe Duty" fan clutch.
Did they swap your water pump when they changed the engine, or did they leave the old one on there?

Im having the same issue for the 4th time in less than a yr..and I recently had the intake gaskets replaced a couple weeks ago and even though my thermostat was changed in Feb., I was told that I need to replace it again as the cooling system could have caused it to go bad when it peed everywhere AGAIN lol otherwise I need to replace my temp sending unit since it doesnt appear to be in the best shape either. The other 3 times, it was a crack in the radiator that wasnt showing ne signs of losing coolant and a brand new one lasted me 3 mths before it went bad on me...so have the radiator pressurized JUST IN CASE! They dont call them "throw away radiators" for no reason

Well it is the fan clutch. The fan is not spinning fast enough while idling to get enough air in. I can idle for around 20 minutes or so and it will move up to 220 and over 235 if left for much longer. Its not totally bad yet so I ordered a new one but I don't have time to bother with it currently so I am just going to leave it alone till it totally goes bad on me.
A camrod is just another word people use for a camshaft. It has lifts on it that open up the cylinder valves.

It's totally bad now!
Don't risk overheating and causing more damage. Half hour job and $60 to replace the clutch. Make sure it's a "severe duty" clutch, they're noisy, but they work! This bad boy does the job: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...keyword=215158
