Preparing truck for summer of weekend mountain driving
Hey everyone. I have a job this summer in the Catskill Mountains and on the weekends I will have to drive on lots of mountain roads going to or from where I am working (I stay there during the week) all summer. Is there anything I should do to the truck to prepare it for the mountains or any advice for making sure nothing breaks (aka the transmission or 4x4)? Anything else I should have in the truck since there is no cell service for most of the ride? I always travel prepared, but I just need to be sure:
-Emergency kit with jumper cables, air compressor, basic tools
-Jack/Spare Tire/Tire Iron
-Spare fluids for all systems (oil, trans fluid, gear oil, power steering, coolant, freon, washer)
-Tow rope and strap
-Epoxy putty
-Spare belts
-Jump starter
This truck is not totally stock. It has a few additional items in case this matters.
-Spectre Air intake
-Roof cargo box with straps (for safety in case the box breaks, to compress it against the roof rack to prevent vibration and noise (and prevent it from breaking the sunroof)).
-B&M Transmission cooler
-Deep pan with 1/2 qt of Lucas in the Maxlife fluid
-Posi-Lok system (If I am going into an area where I know I will probably get stuck, I lock it in beforehand and then I can press the button and go into 4x4)
I usually take the trans into 3 if I am going up hills and I only downshift if I feel the brakes cannot keep up with the hills. I follow a specific guideline on max speeds in different gears: OD: 95mph 3: 40mph 2:25mph 1:5-10mph MAX
