Default Problems shifting auto transmission from park

Hello,

I'm new here. Trying to get some help to fix a friend's '99 Trailblazer. It does not want to shift out of park. I've spent about an hour viewing old posts on this topic, and it seems like there are plenty. However, I have not seen a post that gives me a clear solution to this problem. Sorry if I've missed it. Anyway . . .

Floor shift doesn't want to shift out of park. As far as I can tell, this diagram shows his shifter: SHIFT CONTROL/AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. Fits: 1999 Chevrolet BLAZER | Nalley Buick GMC Brunswick

Friend has pulled loose the shifter boot and exposed the innards of the shift mechanism inside the center console. There is a white plastic lever to the right of the base of the shift lever (unfortunately, not shown in the linked parts diagram). If you push down on that lever, the shifter moves freely through the gears.

When pushing on the button on the shift handle, I can see something moving up and down on the metal shift lever (on the right side of part #3 in the linked diagram). It seems that this should, in turn, push on the white plastic lever, but it doesn't. It is like there is a part missing that would link the movement on the shift lever to this white plastic lever. Sorry I don't have a pic. Maybe I can get one the next time he comes by.

Without any further information, I guess I would try replacing the shift lever mechanism: CONTROL. Transmission Shift. Transmission Shift Control Lever. SHIFT for 1999 Chevrolet BLAZER. #15203941

Am I missing something? I've seen various discussions about similar problems being related to the brakes or to a solenoid of some sort. But I'm not sure how either of those relates to this white plastic lever in the center console.

Any help will be appreciated.

Mark
