When the time for the glass pack replacement comes, take a look at the various types of 'Turbo' mufflers on the market. Subdued but with the sound of power! I see Summit Racing has them in the DynoMax Super Turbo, Borla Performance in T-304, Flowtech, Cherry Bomb Turbo, to name a few. Less chance of a quick burn out with the turbo design.

I am researching them, there are some pretty interesting flow designs going on....they are putting baffles in different configurations for different sounds......these new engine configurations are very hard to make sound good.........I sat in a new corvette last week and started it........ans that 700+ horse sounded like it was mean, but it didn't have any purrrr........;-)

I see that one of the turbos [could have been the cherry bomb??] had some kind of a 'V' design........I'd like to hear that on a 4.3........
I think we'll get through the winter with the glasspack....who knows what they will come up with next in muffler design??.....

I am waiting for a couple of wheel spacers to try out now......I don't know if I'm 100% sold on them???.........I'll see how they are made and if they make any drive-ability issues....... I got 1.25.....

I have been looking at the "innards" off some of the new mufflers.......some of them get pretty complex and some of the most expensive are just baffled with v plates......and all weldable .......

It looks like they are going back to simple and easy again.......I think I'll try to build one......I haven't had a good welding project for a while...I'm not going to mess with dual exhaust......so i don't have to worry about an exact match on sound for two mufflers...

Don James, re: your comment: 'a long way from my galvanized pipe dump caps'. When I was in High School, there were two ways to go to make your own 'cut out's'. The gal. steel pipe caps were good, but they tended to rust on quickly. So on Saturday night and you wanted to intimidate your race opponent, it was always a hassle when they were rusted shut and you didn't have the right tools to get them off. The other solution was the 'junk yard gas filler neck' method. You get two of those welded on the duals---one on each side. Easy to pop off. They didn't seal as nicely as the gal. pipe caps did, so you would make a gasket out of asbestos and put it in the top of the cap. Oh yes, sometimes the gas cap top would vibrate off at the most inopportune moments so the smart guys would safety wire them on with 'bailing wire'. Now you are good to go. Come to think of it, the Hooker engineered version is nice when it is raining and you don't want to crawl under the vehicle. Yes, we have come a long way!

Okay, I said there were two ways to go with a 'cut out' back in the day. But wait, an old high school buddy reminded me of a third way: J. C. Whitney. This is a cut out that works from inside the vehicle. You just pull a steel cable mounted under the dash. Now that's the best of both worlds! .....and it is inexpensive. Take a look here: You do remember J.C.Whitney?

Not sold on the J.C. Whitney device? By the way, it is provided by Mr. Gasket which you will see if you click on the post above. But here is another alternative from Jegs. It doesn't have a pull cable and is sealed by a flange with a three bolt cover. Note the wing nuts for easy removal at the drag strip. Alert: It is $0.34 more than the JC Whitney part. You decide!

It seems that i remember the cable set up.........but I was brought up around a bunch of guys that could fix anything or break it trying...;-).......so for me to buy anything that we could make.......would have been a mortal sin.......

I've got the intake off right now.......hoping for a good turnout on this job, so i can start messing with stuff that i LIKE to do.......don't think I'll go the dump cap route again though :-)
