Question radiator fan electric or mechanical

on a 2001 Jimmy is the radiator fan supposed to be hooked up to the water pump, or electric? Mine is electric, but it isn't fully stock. it is wired up to a relay to be on with the switch. I always assumed it came stock w/ an electric fan, but I keep seeing fan clutches and such listed in parts catalogs.

Kinda talking out of my rear end right now, but my guess is it came with a mechanical fan, and somewhere along the way somebody installed the electric.

So the way it's wired, it's always on if the engine/ignition is on? All the factory ones I've seen are setup to come on if the engine temperature reaches a certain point, and shut off once it falls below another point.

Yeah yours would be an after thought. They only came with a mechanical clutch fan.

that's what I thought.that is why I couldn't find the wiring diagram. It looks like there is an unused wire that would go to the the ecm, or temp sensor, I'm ok with it always being on, because I live in the scorching hot desert, once it comes up to temp it stays right between 190 and 195.

That additional wire is likely the AC override to turn it on when the ac kicks on.

if that is the case could I get rid of the relay and use that to turn it on?

I wouldn't. I'm not sure what kind of fan you have but mine are wired with a relay and toggle in the cab for always on and then another relay that is controlled by the ac compressor when it turns on that turns my fans on hi any time the ac is turned on.

thx. I'll do some playing around, especially if I need the extra speed once it gets hot here.

Post a picture of your fan if you can. Mine is a dual fan out of an intrepid. I've got pics of mine somewhere in my build thread.
